The idea behind Hillside Candy has always been simple: Making quality confections for a healthier lifestyle.
They’re not about being the biggest candy company, but rather filling in the niche market of consumers looking for an alternative to the timeless treat.
And they’re happy with that, said Sandy Gencarelli, director of marketing and export sales. Even after decades, their goal is to serve consumers looking for specific kinds of candy, not simply to dominate the market.
“Our motto is still to provide great quality candy, and provide confections for a niche market…those that are gluten-free, diabetic or simply want great tasting sugar free, those that are looking for organic products or non-GMO.”
The company began back in 1945 as Moru Industries Company, and after going through an ownership change in 1980, began looking towards introducing organic and sugar-free candy, to align with the growing consumer demand.
The company was actually one of the first to have a certified organic candy line. And there’s no doubt that was the right move.
The quality over quantity mindset has more than paid off: The company’s GoLightly line of sugar-free candy is a leading brand in the industry today, and Hillside products including GoLightly and GoOrganic (a line of hard candy, chewy candy and fruit snacks that are organic and non-GMO verified) are shipped all over the world. The candies are also gluten-free and most are allergy and vegan-friendly.
But Hillside products don’t just appeal to adults looking to watch what they eat—kids love GoOrganic and GoLightly candies too. Gencarelli’s personal favorite is the Chocolate Ginger Chews, “a classic chocolate chewy with a kick of ginger. Pure deliciousness.”
“We have a great tasting candy,” Gencarelli said. “People are attracted by our packaging but once they taste it they love the flavor. We have a lot of repeat customers.”
The importance of maintaining the product standards isn’t their only focus—the company is always looking to add more products, Gencarelli said (so be sure to check their website for news!).
While she said that Hillside is very proud of their products, Gencarelli also called out their loyal consumers for supporting the company all these years.
