When you’re sick, it’s likely that you don’t have much of an appetite at all. But getting vitamins and nutrients from healthy food is actually even more important when you’re fighting off a disease. Here’s what to eat when you’re sick, whether it’s a little sniffle or a full-blown flu.

The common cold virus has no cure, so once you’ve got one, you’re stuck with it. And while you’re guzzling that horrible medicine, make sure you’re also getting plenty of foods that fight phlegm (that gross stuff that builds up in your nose and throat when your nasal passages are stuffed up). That means chicken soup, spicy foods and citrus.

The flu can be trickier, because it often comes with some nasty nausea. But simply starving yourself won’t work. Try getting your nutrients and fluids with fruit or vegetable juice, or even smoothies. If you feel up to eating, try something neutral but still healthy, like oatmeal.

Anyone who’s had migraines knows they are no joke, and you want them gone ASAP. Headaches are often caused by blood sugar going up and down, so foods that help level out blood sugar are ideal. Whole grains are one of the best foods for that, and nuts and beans can help relax the blood vessels in your brain and reduce inflammation.

If you’ve got it really bad, stick with water at first. Then try something high in fat. A lot of people go for something greasy like a burger and fries, but let’s admit it, that rarely sounds appetizing when you’re just trying to keep from dry heaving. Try a healthier and less…overwhelming healthy fat like avocado. Also give spicy food a shot – they kickstart your metabolism to get that booze out of you faster.
